How briefs are made
Briefs on this site are written by an AI model, not by a reporter. This page explains exactly how.
Where the facts come from
Each run fetches public sources at that moment:
- National Weather Service forecast for downtown Cleveland and active alerts for Cuyahoga County
- U.S. Geological Survey readings for the Cuyahoga River at Independence
- City of Cleveland news and updates feed
- Federal Register documents that mention Cuyahoga

How a brief is written and checked
- The model is told to use only those sources, cite them paragraph by paragraph, quote no one, and stay neutral and nonpartisan.
- An automatic check then compares the draft with the sources. A draft is refused if a paragraph cites no source, if any number or proper name is not found in the sources it cites, if it contains a quotation, if it uses partisan or opinion words, or if it cites fewer than three sources.
- A refused draft is never published. The run asks the model once more, passing on what the check refused, and the new draft goes through the same check. If that one is refused too, nothing is published that day; the reasons are logged and the next run tries again.
- Spending on the AI service is capped in code at $1.00 a day.
No person edits a brief before it is published. The check is mechanical: it can confirm that numbers and names appear in the sources, not that every sentence is a perfect summary. The linked sources are the authority; please read them for anything that matters to you.
